Hilo, HI – Monday’s contest between Academy of Art University (6-12, 2-5 Pac West) and
University of
Hawaii at
Hilo (6-13, 3-5 Pac West) came down to the final buzzer with the Urban Knights on the losing end of the heart breaker. AAU was unable to complete their comeback as they were defeated by the Vulcans, 67-64.
Junior Ashleigh Frazier led the team with 14 points as she shot 5-of-10 from the floor. The guard knocked down 2-of-3 from behind the arc and pulled down six rebounds for the Urban Knights.
Receiving seven first half points from junior Jessica Nolan, the Urban Knights finished the half tied with the Vulcans at 28.
AAU jumped out to an early seven point lead which included two 3pt shots from freshman Madeline Houston. However, they later surrendered their lead and were never able to regain it. The Vulcans led by as many as 11 during the game, but missed jumpers at the buzzer gave the Urban Knights the loss.
AAU finished the day 29-of-59 from the floor including 35.3 percent from deep and received 20 points from their bench.
Nolan, second in the Pac West in rebounding, grabbed a team high 10 against the Vulcans. The forward also shot 5-of-8 from the field to record 11 points in the game. Houston (Tualatin, OR) finished the contest with 10 points, shooting 4-of-11 in her 27 minutes of play.
Hina Kimitete, who is fourth in the conference averaging 13.6 points per game, was the standout for the Vulcans. She shot 7-of-16 from the floor to notch 18 points. Hoita Vaaimamao also played well recording a game high 11 rebounds.
The Urban Knights will continue the Hawaii part of their schedule Wednesday February 3rd. They will take on Brigham Young University – Hawaii at 5 p.m. (Hawaiian time) at Cannon Activities Center.
