St, George, UT– Academy of Art University (2-1) defeated Pittsburg State University (2-4) on Saturday afternoon, 71-67. With the win, the Urban Knights finished with a 1-1 record in the Dixie State Thanksgiving Classic.
Starting off strong, AAU jumped out to a 16-5 lead in the first six minutes of the contest and would not surrender their lead for the rest of the game. The team showed their versatility with seven different players scoring, including 28 points from the bench.
AAU’s leading scorer, Junior guard Ashleigh Frazier, was outstanding for the Urban Knights as she notched 20 points against the Gorillas. Frazier’s 9 for 16 from the floor contributed to the team’s field goal percentage of 42 and an impressive 43 percent from behind the arc.
Another standout for AAU was senior guard Sondra Stilwell, who posted 15 points and dished out a team-high six assists. Junior forward Jessica Nolan, who leads the team with 10 rebounds per game, finished the day with 11 rebounds.
For Pittsburg, DePrice Taylor and Laura Glenn both posted a team high 14 points. Taylor, the Gorillas leading scorer, also played well defensively with four steals in the game.
Up next, the Urban Knights will head to Redding, Ca. to take on Simpson University. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip off on Tuesday Nov. 30th.
